Sree Thuruneli Mahavishnu Temple has a rich history dating back several centuries. According to local legends, the temple was founded by Lord Parasurama, an avatar of Lord Vishnu, who is believed to have created the state of Kerala. 

The temple is mentioned in several ancient texts, including the Skanda Purana and the Bhagavata Purana, which date back to the 8th and 9th centuries CE. The temple is also mentioned in the writings of the famous medieval philosopher and theologian, Adi Shankaracharya.

The current structure of the temple is believed to have been built in the 12th century by the local ruler, Vishnuvardhana, who was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. The temple was later renovated and expanded by the rulers of the Kottayam royal family in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Throughout its history, the temple has been a center of religious and cultural activity in the region. It has also been a site of conflict and political intrigue, with various rulers and dynasties vying for control of the temple and its resources.
